Woza Moya African Arts Gallery

Welcome to Woza Moya’s Artists & Exhibitions page. Explore our current, upcoming, and past exhibitions, and meet the talented artists behind the work.

We have a wonderful African arts gallery above our Woza Moya shop in Hillcrest which we use to showcase the work of local South African artists and crafters. It is an extension of our downstairs shop, and we encourage all customers to climb the stairs and explore the treasures it holds.

A Language Without Words

Art, creativity, and inspiration converges in a celebration of photography and colourful paintings.

Nqobile’s huge, colourful paintings adorned with beads, are sure to captivate visitors with their boldness and intricate craftsmanship.  The photographic series, which evokes nostalgia with its dark tones and depiction of childhood games familiar to South Africans. Both these works spark conversations and reflections, showcasing the artist’s attention to detail.

Curated by Mnqobi Buthelezi, this exhibition, takes audiences on a journey from dark, black-and-white photographs to bright, contemporary paintings, some beaded and stretched on large canvas. The striking layout of the artworks and props really bring this exhibition to life.

Behind Closed Doors

An exhibition that explores aspects of history in Durban, mental health, gender and sexuality, sparking meaningful conversations and connections. Curated by Nomfundo Khathi, with artists; Sinethemba Ndimande, Masibulele Nako, and Manelisi Nene.

Masibulele Nako is a photographer from Ngqwabeni, Eastern Cape, South Africa, who began creating art in 2021 after being inspired by Zanele Muholi and Brook Didonato. Nako’s work honors her roots and reflects her surrealist photography practice, addressing themes like mental illness and identity. One image features a ghostly figure covered in a patterned sheet, symbolising the silent struggles of women facing mental illness and societal pressure.
Sinethemba Ndimande is an artist from Umlazi, Durban, embracing both her masculinity and femininity without being limited by gender stereotypes. Her work challenges traditional gender norms.
Manelisi Nene, is a photographer from Zwelibovu, KZN. He is inspired by abstract expressionism and Olga Karlovac, he aims to document street life and important moments for future generations. His art reflects the vibrancy of Durban and the newfound freedom to pursue dreams post-apartheid.
