From Shadows to Spectrum: Art Exhibition Recap

Step into the vibrant world of our recent exhibition, where art, creativity, and inspiration converged in a celebration of photography and colourful paintings. As I walked through the doors, I was struck by the thoughtful layout of the artworks and props. Let me take you on a tour of the highlights, share insights from the artists, and relive the magic of the exhibition.

One of the standout features was Nqobile’s huge, colourful paintings adorned with beads, which captivated visitors with their boldness and intricate craftsmanship. Another highlight was the photographic series, which evoked nostalgia with its dark tones and depiction of childhood games familiar to South Africans. These works sparked conversations and reflections, showcasing the artists’ attention to detail.

I had the chance to sit down with Nqobile and discuss their inspiration behind the artworks featuring a woman and boy with blue skin. “Blue is my comfort colour,” she shared, revealing the emotions that drove its creation and the comforting process of making art.

Ayanda Ngcobo spoke about the theme of childhood memories in their work. “These pictures were shot in my hometown, eMbumbulu – these are the games we grew up playing as children,” he explained, offering a glimpse into his vision and story.

The exhibition, “From Shadows to Spectrum,” took audiences on a journey from dark, black-and-white photographs to bright, contemporary paintings, some beaded and stretched on large canvas. As the exhibition came to a close, it was clear that it had left a lasting impact on all who attended, creating an unforgettable experience for art enthusiasts, curious visitors, and those seeking inspiration.

A huge thank you to the artists, curator Mnqobi Buthelezi, and everyone involved in bringing this exhibition to life. We look forward to more art exhibitions at the Woza Moya African Art Gallery.
