Ntombifuthi began weaving in 1993 and quickly developed her signature style – bold colour combinations, intricate geometric patterns, and a unique blend of Zulu and Ndebele influences.

She uses a finer gauge (thinner) wire than most of the other wire-basket weavers, which allows her more detail in her designs. It also, however, means that her bowls take a lot longer to make than those of the other crafters.

Materials & Impact

Crafted by hand using PVC-coated wire and a galvanised steel core, selected for durability and longevity.

This work continues the tradition of Zulu telephone wire weaving—an adaptive craft that historically made use of reclaimed materials. While modern wire is now used for quality and consistency, the spirit of resourcefulness and innovation remains central to the practice.
