We are honoured to have: Nosipho Duma the youngest artist we have ever featured as the artist of the month of January 2022, her painting Teenage Pregnancy is a hard hitting painting of a young school girl who is pregnant with an alcohol bottle nearby. In the artists own words: “My work speaks about peer pressure and issues that young women face while growing up. From alcohol, drugs, and sexual diseases. The biggest issue that young women face is teenage pregnancy. This then affects them by losing their dignity, people not respecting them, increasing poverty due to children that are parentless and crime.”

Artist Profile:

Art has always been a part of Nosipho Dumas Life, her father is well known South African Artist Sibusiso Duma. She was born in Mlazi. She is only fifteen years old, we felt her painting had a powerful message for 2022. She attends High School and is currently doing grade ten.

“I started drawing pictures last year (2020) during lockdown. My father taught me how to use paint and that is when I took the initiative.”

Bidding for Painting and Artist’s Cards

The painting is for sale and people can bid for the painting, bidding starts at R1500 at the start of each month, bidding will close at the end of the month and the person who has the highest bid gets to purchase the painting, the artist will get a further percentage of the sale.

To assist the artist we have reproduced the artwork on a gift card and the artist gets 50%  of the profit from the sale of his or her cards. If you love the artist’s work please support them by buying a card they are only R25, and card sales help artists earn a passive income.

Terrifying Teenage pregnancy statistics

We hope by featuring this painting we can bring some awareness to the huge problem of teenage pregnancy in South Africa.

Nearly 130,000 babies were delivered to girls aged 10 to 19 in South African public health facilities in 2019. This figure increased to 136,386 deliveries for girls in the same age cohort in 2020

• August 2021: The number of children born to teen mothers in South Africa’s most populous province, Gauteng, has jumped 60% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic
• Gauteng Department of Health show that more than 23,000 girls aged under 18 gave birth between April 2020 and March 2021 – of which 934 were aged under 14 – compared to 14,577 girls aged 19 and under having babies in the same period a year earlier.
• Cape Town Department of health recorded “A total of 34 587 births were of mothers aged 17 years and younger. Of the 34 587 births from teen mothers, 16 042 were aged 17 years while 688 were 10 years young.
• In South Africa, 37% spike in GBV complaints in the first week of total lockdown
• One factor that has contributed to this is violence against women and girls. In South Africa one in three women experience gender based-violence and one in five children under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse.
• Catherine Mathews, director of (SAMRC) said it would take time to assess the full impact school closures had on teen pregnancies. “We do know that schools can be an important, safe, protective environment for girls, and when schools close, children are often left unsupervised and can be more at risk of sexual violence.”
• To make matters worse, sound family planning and contraception have not been easily accessible for many South African teens and the pandemic restrictions probably made a bad situation worse. The District Health Barometer 2019/20 notes that persistent stock-outs of contraception have been reported since 2018.

The concept behind the Woza Moya Artist’s Wall and Artist’s Cards is to create and showcase work for artists who have been hard hit by Covid. Each month a different Artist is paid to paint a 1,2m x 1,2m wall panel which is displayed on the wall outside our Woza Moya, Hillcrest AIDS Centre shop. Woza Moya assists the artist by marketing their work for the entire month their work is on display. A greeting card is made of the painted wall panel and sold in our shops so that artists can earn an ongoing passive income.
