Crochet Project: Creating Sustainable Income Through Craft

Crochet Project Update 17 February 2026

Our crochet project officially launched in February 2026 with a clear goal: to create a sustainable source of income for a growing group of talented crafters by turning their skills into beautiful, market-ready products for our shops.

At the moment, the project consists of two dedicated women. Though small, this team represents the beginning of something with real potential.  By the end of the year, we aim to grow from two to at least five crafters, increasing both our production capacity and our impact.

Meet the Team

Winnie Nene

Winnie Nene is a long-time crafter at Woza Moya and brings years of experience to the project. Over time, she has contributed to numerous crochet initiatives, including vibrant and eye-catching yarn bombing installations. Many of our customers already know Winnie for her popular washcloths and patch kits, which are regular features in our shops. Her skill, creativity, and reliability make her an invaluable part of this new venture.

Lynette Phewa

Lynette Phewa has been supplying Woza Moya with beautifully crafted mats and bags made from upcycled plastic shopping bags since 2025. While her work has been well received, she is eager to supplement her income and expand her creative range. As part of this project, Lynette is developing new skills by learning to work with finer crochet thread — an exciting step that opens the door to more intricate and diverse designs.

This project creates work for other Zulu crafters and beaders:

Zoleka Shozi, Phindi Mbatha and Princess Madlala are the crafters that make the beaded bee and beaded ladybird charms. These embellishments are added to every Woza Moya food cover, setting them apart and giving them a signature Woza Moya appearance.

Our Current Focus: Food Nets & Jug Covers

Our first product range focuses on practical beauty for the home: handcrafted food nets and jug covers designed to keep pesky flies away from your meals.

Each piece combines functionality with artistry. Delicate crochet borders are added to fine netting. and the designs embellished with flowers, beaded insects, and decorative beadwork. The result is something both useful and charming – everyday items made special through care and craftsmanship.

These products have just started arriving in our shops and will soon be available online. Every purchase directly supports income generation, skill development, and the growth of this small but determined team. This project is about more than crochet. It is about building stability, nurturing creativity, and creating opportunity – starting with two women, with the goal of building sustainable income for many more.
