Beaded Necklaces – Strung with Love, Worn with Pride

Behind every necklace is a maker with a story — and the women behind our handmade pieces carry stories of hope, heritage, and hard-won creativity.

Many of them come from places like Ladysmith, Winterton, and Pinetown, and began crafting out of a love for art or simply to keep their hands busy. For others, it was a way to support themselves and their families.

The group shared how their story began when they were let down by a client, instead of giving up, they searched for new opportunities. That search led them to the Church Land Programme, an NPO based in Pietermaritzburg that supports people in need — including women determined to empower themselves.

Through this connection, they discovered Woza Moya, a creative hub that has since encouraged them to grow, supported their work, and helped them unlock the creativity inside them.

Making a necklace takes anywhere from one to four days — depending on the detail — but behind each one is patience, care, and pride.

When asked what they love most about creating with their hands, their answers were full of meaning: the joy of seeing someone wear their work, the trust customers place in them, and the freedom to express culture through colour. Some shared how beading has kept them focused and away from distractions, while giving them something deeply personal to be proud of.

To them, this work is more than craft — it’s culture. It’s a way of remembering where they come from, preserving tradition, and building a future. One maker put it simply: “You cannot make these necklaces if you are not patient and caring.”

We ended our conversation with a playful question: If your necklaces could speak, what would they say?

“We enjoy the patience and warmth we get from our crafters.”

“The way you put me together is so beautiful, it makes people want to own me.”

“Thank you for turning loose beads into a beautiful art piece.”

Every necklace is more than just decoration — it’s a story, strung with love and worn with pride.
