Sink the Pink – Transforming a Problem into a Purpose

Recently, we had the opportunity to showcase our beadwork at Nirox as part of the Cape Insights Art Tour, where we met a group of American art enthusiasts. During our tour of the Cradle of Humankind, we learned about the invasive pompom weed, a species that threatens the survival of grasslands and wetlands across South Africa. Inspired by this experience and in collaboration with Sheila Majola, we designed a striking necklace and earring set featuring our signature beadwork.

dangerous specie inspired art Our motto, “The best pompom weed is a beaded one!” reflects our creative approach to highlighting the issue. By transforming this problematic weed into a work of art, we aim to raise awareness and support for the “Sink the Pink” eradication campaign. In the future, we would like for the sale of the necklaces to go towards contributing to protect South Africa’s natural landscapes. We hope to see this beautiful beadwork in local tourist shops in Mpumalanga, serving as a symbol of art and conservation coming together.
