Sibusiso Maphumulo – Artist of Month July 2021

Sibusiso’s Maphumulo is the artist for July, his commissioned work entitled: Mountain Snake and Divine Angel

This piece which is a carved and burnt wooden board is a story about that there are degrees of people and creatures  that live amongst us, some are big and scary, others are humble and others are extremely dangerous like the 6 headed snake that lives in the mountains and the rivers. Its wrath is beyond imagination and it has many eyes. We must not be fearful as there are angels all around us that protect us. Everyone has their own angel that protects them. The angels block the venom of the world and the angel brings light and love into the world and is sent by God to protect us.  The work is so relevant to the situation we find ourselves in today.

About Sibusiso Maphumulo

Sibusiso lives in Thandanani in Verulam. He started carving at a very young age, and was self-taught, he comes from a family of carvers, his father and grandfather were both carvers, a fact he only learnt late in life when he was already carving, as his family died when he was very young. Sibusiso is known as the carver of angels and many of them are quite humorous as they wear sunglasses. His first angel was based on himself and later he had visions and dreams at night at what he should carve. He often wakes up at night to draw his visions and sometimes seeing a piece of wood dictates what he should carve. He is a very spiritual person who is passionate about carving. Sibusiso travelled overseas with the Bat centre promoting his work

Sibusiso’s work is available at Woza Moya Hillcrest, Woza Moya Windermere Centre and on our online store. It is also available African Art Centre
