This is an exhibition where we have worked with crafters to develop products around our local indigenous birds, from Guinea fowl, Mynah birds (a non-indigenous bird we all love to hate), Hornbills, Sandpipers, Red Bishops, Wood hoopoes, Crows and Weavers . We also have a beautiful array of Chickens, Roosters and egg baskets to coincide with Easter. My personal favourites are the Hornbills and Mynahs by Lexus, as he has such a sensitivity for the anatomy of animals and birds. Although we wanted to keep them as surprise, a couple of birds have already been ordered and sent overseas and across ZA as they were just too beautiful to keep hidden for a month while we built up stock! But this has ensured a steady stream of work for crafters which was the whole aim of this project.
We also have some unique wood sculptures of birds and humans by Artists Sibusiso Maphumulo and Josephat Phiri. Bothe sculptors chose to depict women riding on birds which are delightfully surrealistic.
Modern Bird paintings by Tania Kuhl will be on display, Tania Kühl is a local artist who completed her Masters Degree in Fine Art in 2010 and went on to work in digital design for many years before finding her way back to her passion for painting during hard lockdown in 2020. Her paintings are a reflection of her love for nature, colour, and texture. Tania works from her home studio in Kloof. The paintings are a great fusion of digital design and Fine Art. The bird paintings are reasonably priced and it will be hard to say no to buying one or all of these! They will make a great gift for a bird lover, or will be beautiful in any home!
We also delighted to have three special Award winning embroidery paintings by Irena Skibinski an ex Woza Moya Volunteer. It’s hard to imagine the time and effort that went into these embroidery paintings. In fact it is very hard to see that they are embroideries rather than paintings. If you love embroidery or appreciate handwork then you must come to this exhibition to view these. We are hoping to have Irena run a workshop for anyone who is keen to get any tips, we will keep everyone updated on this.
We would like to Thank the National Arts Council for sponsoring this exhibition and helping us develop a basket of new products with crafters that will ensure that crafters continue to earn an income over this difficult period.
